Mosaics: Ancient Techniques to Contemporary Art  

To mark the publication of her first book on mosaics, Helen Miles will give a presentation focusing on the ancient principles of mosaic making and their relevance to contemporary work. These principles don’t just apply to laying of the tesserae but also extend to the planning and designing of mosaics, both Roman-style and contemporary abstract pieces. The talk will touch on the concepts of sdoppiamento and andamento and will demonstrate how these concepts have been used across the centuries.  

About Helen Miles

Trained in Greece, Helen Miles is the former editor of Andamento, the journal of the British Association for Modern Mosaics. She has more than 20 years’ experience designing, making and teaching mosaics.  

Helen’s first book about mosaics, Mosaics: Ancient Techniques to Contemporary Art, will be published by White Owl press in March 2023. She is based in Edinburgh where she runs mosaic workshops as well as leading an annual residential course in Greece.

Alice MacDonnell, who is the Great (x4) Granddaughter of Sir Henry Cole, the Founder of the V&A and of a former mosaic school in the museum, will be giving a talk about her personal mission to join all of the institutions, museums and scholars together to continue promoting the legacy of Cole, who was a Great Titan in his day.

Alexi Marshall

In this instalment of the LSoM Artist Lectures Series Alexi Marshall will talk through her practise. Alexi investigates rebirth, spirituality and womanhood, often investigating the cyclical nature of life and death. She uses a range of media but focuses primarily on print, mosaic, textiles. Amongst other awards including the Boise travel scholarship and Antony Dawson print prize, Marshall was selected as one of the ‘Bloomberg New Contemporaries’ exhibiting at Liverpool John Moores University and The South London Gallery (2018).

In 2019 Marshall completed her first solo exhibition "The Redemption of Delilah" at Public Gallery. More recently, she took part in the group exhibition 'Dancing At The Edge Of The World'  (2020) curated by Marcelle Joseph at Sara Zanin Gallery in Rome.

Other group exhibitions include ‘Bridge’, Izo Gallery, Moscow (2018), ‘Figurative Now’, Daniel Benjamin gallery, London (2018), ‘Young Gods’, Charlie Smith, London (2018) and ‘18/11/1’, PMQ, Hong Kong (2018), Guts Gallery, London (2019).

Catherine Parkinson

Catherine's background is in textiles, she has a degree in embroidery, painting and drawing from Manchester Metropolitan University. However, she feels that the mosaic medium can give an image a depth and solidity that cannot be achieved with any other art form, which is why she chooses to work in this medium. She began studying mosaics in 1992 with Vanessa Benson and undertook an informal apprenticeship with her until 1995, when she embarked on her first mosaic commission. She exhibits regularly in London and throughout the UK and has been commissioned around the world.

Matt Feldman

Matt Feldman is a multidisciplinary artist working across sculpture, mosaic, photography, installation, and sound. He graduated with a BA Fine Arts degree from Goldsmiths College in 2018 and was awarded a junior fellowship with the university for the following academic year. He also participated on the Into the Wild artist development program at Chisenhale Studios in 2019.

Thirza Smith

Thirza is currently at the Royal Academy studying on the post graduate programme. His work uses traditional methods of creating, pointing more towards a craft aesthetic. Caroline Jariwala - Mango Mosaics

Caroline Jariwala is a painter, visiting lecturer, exhibitions organiser and community artist. Caroline’s Mango Mosaics uses the picassiette method of old, chipped and discarded crockery celebrating a new sense of joyful beauty.

Since qualifying as a teacher in 1990, she has worked on projects in schools, art galleries and community venues. Her experience covers a wide range of art forms, such as illustration, batik, mural and mosaic.

Since 1986 she has exhibited nationally in solo and group exhibitions. Jariwala’s work features in databases and directories, ALISS, Birmingham Education Arts Forum, Directory of Cultural Contacts (Arts Council), AAVAA (African and Asian Visual Arts Archive), AXIS and The Art House.

Matt Small

In this instalment of the Artist Lecture series Matt Small will be talking about his art practise. Primarily a painter, Small also makes metal works which blend the boundary between paintings and mosaics.

London based Small has a strong, compelling style, often choosing discarded objects like car bonnets or old signs instead of canvas for his work. “The theme of my work is young, dispossessed people: individuals who feel undervalued, who don’t have a voice, who get looked over.” Small explains how the urban debris he paints on becomes symbolic of the feeling of being without value: “I thought it’d be interesting to connect the two – that oven door, that shelving unit, that piece of trash to someone – I don’t see it like that, I see that it can be something beautiful and worthwhile. That’s how I see our young people too. Let’s look at their potential, at the hope that’s in all of them

All invited artists have been specifically picked to contrast each other and offer different perspectives on what contemporary mosaics can be . However, all are successful practising mosaic makers exhibiting and working with institutions such as The Venice Biennale, The De La Warr Pavilion, The Chisenhale Gallery, The Royal Academy, The British School in Rome and more.

These lectures are intended to inspire and challenge in equal measure. The expectation is that through these lectures we will be able to further define what is possible with mosaics in the present day- and through attending these lectures you will be able to define your own position amongst a myriad of practitioners.

The lectures take the form of a simple artist talk, 45 minutes and then a short Q+A session. It will take place in our workshop. The artists will talk about their attitude to art, and then contextualise their mosaic work and explain why they think it is a good medium.

The lectures are open to the public, and we welcome interested parties from all backgrounds.

Andy Williams

In this instalment of the lecture series Andy Williams will be talking about his art practise, in which he primarily uses in mosaic to build three dimensional sculptures.

He says:

"I am a sculptor and mosaicist interested in the use of mosaic as a way of building form and interacting with 3-dimensional space. My work often materialises in obsessively constructed monochromatic forms that reference, but ultimately deny, domestic functionality.

Contextualised by the historic destruction of mosaics by iconoclastic movements, the medium presents me with a framework with which to consider contemporary object-making (and breaking) as well as an outlet for sculptural expression and material exploration."

Francesca Busca

In this instalment of the series our very own Francesca Busca (Fabrication Tutor) will be talking about her mosaic practise. Francesca defines herself as an eco-artivist or RUBBISH ARTIST.

She says:

“Torn between optimism and surrender, I am haunted by the idea of mankind’s imminent self-destruction. Yet, I believe in a future for humanity of resourceful innovation through re-thinking, re-purposing and reducing. It is this hope that is made visible through my work, which is composed almost entirely of rubbish and ‘found’ material.”

Ruaidhri Ryan

Ruaidhri has exhibited internationally and nationally in art galleries and at film festivals. Working with film and video for over a decade, his practice began to incorporate mosaic, which has become a form of increasing focus since a three-month residency as Augusta Scholar at the British School at Rome.

Ruaidhri will be discussing patience, humour, a love for the mundane as well as his relationship with narrative film and the effect cinema has had on his visual art practice.
