We are excited to host this talk by Sabina Giuntinelli, who will reflect on her work at Spiers Arts Academy in Cape Town, South Africa:
From 2014 to 2020 Sabina dedicated herself to teaching mosaic to young adults in Cape Town, South Africa at Spier Arts Academy. The Academy was started in 2008 by private patrons and its aim was to conjugate career development for emerging African artists with the creation of artisanal and business skills in youths coming from disadvantaged situations.
Spier Arts Trust, an Art Consultancy and curator, functioned as the link between the fine art world and the Academy, in virtue of the Creative Block project amongst other initiatives.
Her role was to train and prepare the Academy apprentices in the mosaic medium, including the historical styles and traditions, up to a professional level. The academy’s learners came from very different educational backgrounds and we had to face many challenges. The results were wonderful, in terms of artworks production and in terms of human bonding and growth, among both the learners and the staff.
