Personalised Learning
This is a term-long course in which you can develop your own mosaic project at either level: beginners, intermediate or advanced. You will work alongside students from across these levels, as the course is intended to provide students with the opportunity to build up to the next level during an additional term. This course runs alongside the school calendar over 12 weeks with one week off for half-term.
The course is structured around a personalised learning plan with the option to gain a Nation Open College Network (NOCN) qualification.
Learning plan according to level:
We first assess students' level: beginner, intermediate or advanced. Based on this we recommend a project that is relevant for their learning aims:
beginner: e.g. a small mosaic of an ornament or a Roman pattern to teach students andamento, how to cut ceramic and/or marble, using the direct method
intermediate: e.g. a figurative mosaic such as a flower or an animal with vitreous glass and/or smalti, using either the direct or indirect method with vinyl or paper with glue
advanced: e.g. a more complex design or portrait or figure with a combination of materials and different styles (Roman or Byzantine) using the indirect method
Tutors are giving you tutorial support during your time in the studio, while conversation with other students is encouraged to gain feedback on your work.
This is ideal for those who are not in a position to commit to our year-long diploma but are looking for something more than a short course.
About the optional Level 2 Qualification:
Students can register for a Level 2 National Open College Qualification while completing their term(s) with us. We teach the following qualifications, which can be completed alongside this course:
“Introduction to mosaic” NOCN Level 2 Award
“Mosaic Practice (Preparation for work in the creative industries)” NOCN Level 2 Certificate
Both of these courses (which are externally verified) are designed around the skills, techniques and tasks of making mosaics and operating in a lively mosaic studio. Students work to an individual learning plan and create a portfolio, with guidance and support from our tutors.
Most students undertake the practical side of their courses in our studio. The research, design, recording, and evaluation can be undertaken from home, our studio, or elsewhere (i.e. library) if students decide to take the qualification.
